Organisation
Semester 1 comprises two modules, each worth 15 credits. The first module consists of two sub-modules based on interdisciplinary themes:
- Migration, Economics and Politics
- The Individual, Identity and Society
The second module during Term 1 is a course in methodology and scientific theory.
Semester 2 also comprises two modules, each worth 15 credits. The first module consists of a selection of optional advanced courses. The second module is in the form of a project; supervision and support is offered individually and in groups, as well as by means of a series of seminars.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
After finishing the course, the student:
- can show a broad knowledge of issues within the field of study encompassed by IMER, and can show specialised knowledge and understanding of the causes of international migration and of its consequences, as manifested, for example, in the form of refugee status and issues of integration and segregation, etc.;
- can show specialised knowledge of different forms of group identification and of how this process is affected by notions of religion, culture, language and ethnicity, all of which have a bearing on mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion within society;
- can show specialised understanding of processes of ethnic and social identity occurring at both an overall level and a micro-level within society and
can show in-depth knowledge of methodology in the field of research encompassing the humanities and the social sciences, with particular emphasis on IMER research issues.
Applying knowledge and understanding
After finishing the course, the student:
- can show the requisite knowledge to act as a creative resource and impart information about diverse migration-related issues in society, with reference to religion, culture, language and ethnicity, concepts which are significant with regard to social mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion;
- can show the ability to integrate knowledge critically and systematically, and to analyse, evaluate and handle complex issues and situations, even when in possession of limited information;
- can show an in-depth understanding of diverse scientific perspectives, and can, within agreed timetables, independently postulate theses, as well as, in line with strict scientific research procedure, identify the complexity of questions at issue and construct the requisite argumentation to carry out advanced investigations and scientific work;
- can demonstrate his or her acquired knowledge by means of an extensive independent piece of work evidencing in-depth ability to analyse and evaluate information on a scientific basis;
can show ability to communicate the results of his or her own work, or the results of others, both orally and in writing, in national and international contexts and can apply knowledge of Malmö University’s perspectives to issues pertaining to IMER.
Making judgments and communication skills
After finishing the course, the student:
- can show an in-depth ability to respond to key issues in the field of IMER, particularly those regarding relations between majority populations and ethnic minorities, or among different ethnic minorities.
- can show a scientific approach to IMER-related issues and to processes within society viewed in a broader sociological context;
- can show the ability to identify his or her need for further knowledge within the subject of IMER and can take responsibility for the development of that knowledge;
- can show an in-depth ability to adopt a multidisciplinary perspective, an in-depth knowledge of methodology, and a profound insight into current research and development work; furthermore, can show an ability to respond critically to new methods of knowledge generation and can show ability to evaluate IMER-related issues, taking into account relevant scientific, sociological and ethical aspects, and can show in-depth insight into the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and our collective responsibility for how it is used; in addition, can show developed awareness of the ethical aspects of research and development work.
