This course is classified under the main field of study of Materials Engineering and can be used to fulfill degree requirements for a Master’s degree (120 hp) in Materials Engineering .

Course objectives

The objective of the course is for the student to further develop the knowledge, understanding and the skills needed to work with problems in the area of materials science, where physical, chemical and computational models, as well as experimental methods, are used. This involves developing the ability to independently plan, carry out and present a project which contributes to research in the area.

• Plan and carry out a research project within the given timeframe

After completing the course the student shall be able to:
• Select an appropriate research method for a given scientific problem and justify its suitability
• Evaluate and analyse relevant research issues of importance within materials science
• Critically analyse a scientific report and identify its main strengths and weaknesses
• Identify a personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for continued learning
• Critically judge and evaluate research results
• Make value judgements taking into consideration the relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, as well as show awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work

Assessment

Requirements for pass: Passed Master thesis formulation and project plan (2 credits), passed written thesis with oral defense (25 credits) passed opponentship (3 credits).

Course evaluation

The University provides students who are taking or have completed a course with the opportunity to share their experiences of and opinions about the course in the form of a course evaluation that is arranged by the University. The University compiles the course evaluations and notifies the results and any decisions regarding actions brought about by the course evaluations. Interim rules
