This course is classified under the main field of study of Materials Engineering and can be used to fulfill degree requirements for a Master’s degree (120 hp) in Materials Engineering .

Course objectives

The objective of the course is for the student to further develop the knowledge, understanding and the skills needed to work with problems in the area of materials science, where physical, chemical and computational models, as well as experimental methods, are used. This involves developing the ability to independently plan, carry out and present a project which contributes to research in the area.

Course contents

  • Introductory literature studies which define and limit the scope of the work
  • Execution and completion of this work inidividually, as well as presentation of it in a written report
  • Oral presentation of the student’s work, as well as written and oral defence of other thesis material

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
• Elaborate on the research process
Skills and abilities
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
• Independently and creatively identify, formulate and handle complex problems
• Plan and carry out a research project within the given timeframe
• Seek and find relevant information about a specified research problem
• In a national and international environment, present the result of recognised project work scientifically, both orally and in writing
Judgement and approach
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
• Select an appropriate research method for a given scientific problem and justify its suitability
• Evaluate and analyse relevant research issues of importance within materials science
• Critically analyse a scientific report and identify its main strengths and weaknesses
• Identify a personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for continued learning
• Critically judge and evaluate research results
• Make value judgements taking into consideration the relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, as well as show awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work
• Reflect upon the potential and limitations of science, its role in society and mankind’s responsibility for how it is used

Learning activities

Tutorials, seminars and independent study.

Assessment

Requirements for pass: Passed Master thesis formulation and project plan (2 credits), passed written thesis with oral defense (25 credits) passed opponentship (3 credits).

  • Individual literature, selected by the student in collaboration with their tutor

Course evaluation

The University provides students who are taking or have completed a course with the opportunity to share their experiences of and opinions about the course in the form of a course evaluation that is arranged by the University. The University compiles the course evaluations and notifies the results and any decisions regarding actions brought about by the course evaluations. The results shall be kept available for the students. (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

When a course is no longer given, or the contents have been radically changed, the student has the right to re-take the examination, which will be given twice during a one year period, according to the syllabus which was valid at the time of registration.
