Bachelor of Science including at least 180 credits or equivalent foreign degree in political science, or equivalent, and at least 60 credits, including 15 credits in methodology, within the master´s programme of global politics and societal change or equivalent.

This course is part of the main field of political science at advanced level and is part of the degree requirements for the master's degree with a major in political science.

The course consists of seminar presentations of drafts and independently written work/study in consultation with the supervisor and the defense of the students´own work and critical opposition to others students’ work.

The aim of the course is to help students to develop an expertise in an area of their choice within the main subject, political science, in consultation with the supervisor. Furthermore students are to develop their ability to conduct an independent, critical and scientific academic work/study at the masters level. This will be demonstrated through writing a Masters thesis.

After the students have completed the course master's degree in political science they should be able to:

1. Identify, motivate and formulate adequate and original research questions in the field of global politics.
2. Critically and systematically integrate previous research relevant to a current research question and argue the need for new research.
3. Critically discuss and argue for independent theoretical and methodological choices in a research process.
4. Integrate theory with the method in an in-depth analysis of a relevant and defined research issue in global politics.
5. Conduct a critical and independent analysis of relevant empirical data in the field of global politics, and situate their own study, through a critical and independent dialogue, within the main field of political science.
6. Discuss the possibilities and limitations of the scientific study of global politics and be able to assess their own research based on scientific, social, and ethical aspects.
7. Critically reflect on their own need for further knowledge in the field.
8. Independently write and tproduce their own research in a scientific work in the field of global politics within given time frames.
9. Orally present and defend their scientific work as well as to discuss other students´work.

Teaching takes place in the form of seminars, independent work and tutorials.

Learning outcomes 1-8 are assessed by written work independently and through the presentation and defense of a Masters thesis.

The University provides students who participate in or who have completed a course with the opportunity to make known their experiences and viewpoints with regards to the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarize the results of course evaluations as well as informing participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures initiated in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).

If a course ceases to be available or has undergone any major changes, the students are to be offered two opportunities to retake the examination during the year following the change for re-examination, based on the syllabus which applied at registration.
