Course contents

The aim of the course is to aid product design students in discerning and developing design potentials at the intersection of interaction design and product design through designing within significant fields related to this intersection. Thereby the students also prepare for collaboration across the two design fields and get to explore directions for further study.

Content

• idea development and sketching within product related interaction design,
• analysis and presentation of design concepts

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to:

1. explore, sketch and articulate design elements that relate to salient themes within the intersection of product and interaction design
2. develop design concepts, capturing intertwined qualities in designs at the intersection of product and interaction design
3. identify and articulate key qualities related to interaction and interactivity in the intersection of product and interaction design
4. present a design process and design qualities in ways suitable for the design concept

When the above learning objectives are met in a satisfactory manner, a Pass (G) is given.

Learning activities

The course consists of lectures, exercises and design work.

Assessment

Learning objectives 1-4 are examined through a design crit session on the final project. The design crit builds on a written synopsis.

Both the synopsis and the design crit are divided into

1. a shared section accounting for the overall project undertaken by the project group; and
2. a section, where each student teases out a subtheme or a particular perspective.

An assignment will be given 3 examination possibilities in direct connection to the course. Thereafter, the student may participate in examination the next time the course is held and must then do the assignment in accordance with current instructions. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the student administration prior to course start in order to participate in further examinations.

Course evaluation

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students. Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.

If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format.
