Course objectives
Students will develop different ways of reading and interpreting both older and contemporary texts and will expand their knowledge of and ability to analyse different text genres. In addition, students will develop their own writing towards an increasing breadth of genre, as well as their knowledge of reading, writing, and communication strategies for use in support of pupils’ language development.
Course contents
The course provides an overview of how different literary research perspectives can be used when interpreting fiction. Key texts from the history of English literature are analysed using various critical methods and theories. Older works and genres are made accessible by being placed in their historical and aesthetic contexts, but also by being ‘translated’ into new media forms. In this context, the use of teaching materials for education in literature is also explored. The course also presents advanced research methods for finding and correctly using reference and source material in libraries and databases. Reading and discussion are combined with written, oral and mediated presentations.
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, students will be able to:
- critically discuss the role of literature in language teaching and provide examples of different ways of working with texts from different eras,
- describe theory formation in literary studies and use some common methods of critical analysis,
- describe the content of central texts from different eras and parts of the English-speaking world (including how such texts are used as teaching aids),
- search for sources and examine them critically,
- plan, structure and write a literary studies paper, orally present and defend results, as well as review and discuss another student’s paper with regard to their use of theory, their employed methodology and analytical ability.
Learning activities
The module includes various learning activities such as seminars, lectures, self-study and group work.
Assessment
Assessment is conducted in two parts:
Exam 1: Course Portfolio, 3 higher education credits, in which learning outcomes 1,2 and 3 are assessed.
Exam 2: Conference Paper Presentation, 4.5 higher education credits, in which learning outcomes 4 and 5 are assessed.
Grading criteria for the course are announced by the course coordinator at the start of the course.
