Entry requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (180 credits) or equivalent with a major in chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical technology, biomedical methods and technology, biomedical laboratory science, or in other areas of natural, medical, engineering sciences or technology of relevance to the programme with a minimum of 15 credits in chemistry and/or biochemistry.
- The equivalent of Swedish secondary school English B or English 6.

Organisation
To be awarded a Master’s degree (120 credits), the student is required to complete an independent project (thesis) comprising at least 30 credits in the main field of study. The thesis may comprise less than 30 credits, although no less than 15 credits, if the student has already completed an independent project in the second cycle comprising at least 15 credits in the main field of study or the equivalent from a study programme outside Sweden.
Course progression
The courses are to be completed in the order they are listed in the overview. For admission to the second year courses, at least 45 credits are required from the first-year studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired by other means. In order to begin semester four the student must have achieved a passing grade in semesters one and two.
Credit transfer for courses taken elsewhere
Credit transfers are tested in accordance with the regulations outlined in Chapter 6, Sections 6 – 8 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance
Examination
Examination takes place individually and in accordance with the description included in the relevant course plan.
Right to retake
A student that fails to achieve a passing grade in the examination for a certain course or part of a course will be given the opportunity to be re-examined twice on the same course content and with the same requirements. In addition, students also have the right to be examined on the same course on subsequent occasions when the course is given with the same rule applied. If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student has a right to re-examination on two occasions within one year of the introduction of the changes, based on the syllabus that was in place at the time the student registered for the course. Examination and re-examination take place at the time specified in each course’s respective schedule.

Degree and course certificates are issued in accordance with the regulations outlined in Chapter 6, Sections 9 – 11 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.
Transition to PhD education or transition to third cycle education
At the Faculty of Health and Society, students with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science have the opportunity to conduct PhD studies, i.e. third-cycle education, within the field of biomedical sciences.

Intended learning outcomes for the education at the second cycle level
Chapter 1, Section 9 of the Swedish Higher Education Act (1992:1434)
Education at the second cycle shall involve a deepening of knowledge, skills and abilities beyond the first cycle level and shall, in addition to what is required of first cycle education:
- further develop students’ ability to independently integrate and use knowledge;
- develop students’ ability to deal with complex phenomena, questions and situations; and
- develop students’ qualifications for professional activities that make substantial demands on the individual’s ability to work independently, or for research and development work.

Knowledge and understanding
In order to be awarded a Master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science, the student shall:
- demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the main subject of study;
- demonstrate involvement and profound skills in the field of study, substantially advanced knowledge of some aspects of the field of study, as well as in-depth insight into current research and development work and in-depth knowledge of methods in the main field of study; and
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the field of biomedical surface science, based on experimental and theoretical models of biological interfaces, and specialised knowledge of surface chemistry in applied areas of cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, nano-biotechnology and colloid chemistry, as well as substantial knowledge on the integration of these subjects in biomedical surface science.
Competence and skills
In order to be awarded a Master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science, the student shall:
- demonstrate the ability to theoretically and practically integrate knowledge about the functions of biological interfaces in practical biomedical surface science applications;
- demonstrate the ability to theoretically and practically understand and integrate surface chemistry in applied aspects of cell biology, immunology, molecular biology and nanotechnology;
- demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, questions and situations within the field of biomedical surface science;
- demonstrate the ability to critically, independently and creatively recognise and formulate surface chemical and biological problems, plan and use appropriate methods, and carry out qualified assignments within certain time frames as well as demonstrate the ability to critically assess work conducted within the field of biomedical surface science;
- demonstrate the ability to report, both orally and in writing, on theoretical problems and experimental results; and
- demonstrate the abilities required to participate in research work in natural and medical science fields and independent professional activity in other areas relevant to biomedical surface science.
Judgement and approach
In order to be awarded a Master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science, the student shall:
- demonstrate the ability to make judgements in the field of biomedical surface science with awareness of relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects as well as be able to apply ethical principles in research and development work;
- demonstrate an awareness of the importance of knowledge and research relating to biomedical surface science, account for possibilities and limitations, as well as acknowledge the role of the research in society and responsible use of biomedical surface science knowledge; and
- demonstrate the ability to identify needs for further knowledge and take a personal responsibility for continuous learning.

- ability, within the field of biomedical surface science, to make judgements of relevant issues regarding research ethics, ethical rules and principles, and

The requirements for a Master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science are fulfilled upon completion of the programme.
The degree certificate specifies the Swedish title Masterexamen i biomedicinsk ytvetenskap (120 hp) and the English title Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Biomedical Surface Science.
