Course objectives

The course provides an introduction to some approaches and methods within service design and how these relate to product design. The aim is to offer students a general overview of how the design of products and services can contribute to value creation for organisations.

Course contents

The course focus on value creation through design for different types of organisations and contexts. The students are introduced to product-service-system in theory and practice, through a selection of methods. Throughout the course, potential possibilities and challenges connected to products in service systems are analysed. In the project the students will apply relevant methods when developing a product-service concept and then reflect on value creation through design. Here supervision plays a crucial role.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will have demonstrated the ability to:
  1. apply selected service design methods by developing a product-service-design system
  2. identify and analyse possibilities and challenges connected to products in a service system
  3. show understanding of how the design of products and services can contribute to value creation for an organisation and context
  4. reflect on own experiences from the project and discuss decisions made in relation to relevant course literature

Learning activities

Instruction consists of lectures, workshops, seminars, project work with supervision, design criticism, written and visual assignments.

Assessment

  • Project work (5hp) will be assessed by a written and visual group presentation (film) of a service design concept, and an individual reflection (expected learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3).
  • Individual written and/ or visual assignment (2,5hp) (expected learning outcomes 2,3 and 4).
An assignment will be given 3 examination possibilities in direct connection to the course. Thereafter, the student may participate in examination the next time the course is held and must then do the assignment in accordance with current instructions. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the student administration prior to course start in order to participate in further examinations.

Course evaluation

The University provides all students who are participating in, or have completed, a course to express their experiences and views on the course through a course evaluation which is organized at the end of the course. The university will collate the course evaluations and provide information about their results and any actions prompted by them. The results shall be made available to the students. (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

When a course is no longer given, or the contents have been radically changed, the student has the right to re-take the examination, which will be given twice during a one-year period, according to the syllabus which was valid at the time of registration.
