Progression level in relation to degree requirements
The course is part of the main field of study Materials Science and meets the degree requirement for the degree of Master (Two years), main field of study Materials Science.
Course objectives
The course objective is to provide the student with specialised knowledge within the field of materials engineering and the knowledge and skills to apply mathematical methods to solve problems in this field. Moreover, the student shall develop knowledge of the application of methods for analysis and tests of material properties.
Course contents
The course covers the following:
• advanced crystallography;
• lattice defects;
• diffusion mechanisms;
• phase diagrams;
• deformation and fracture: plastic deformation, fracture, fatigue, creep and stress relaxation;
• environmentally induced impact on material properties;
• thermal, magnetic and optical properties;
• an overview of advanced and new materials; and
• laboratory sessions in mechanical tests and phase diagrams.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course, the student shall:
• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of material engineering, including an overview of the field and specialised knowledge within certain parts of the field; and
• demonstrate specialised knowledge of methodology applied within materials science.
Skills and abilities
After completing the course, the student shall:
• demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and analyse material behaviour, and assess and handle related issues, even with limited information; and
• demonstrate the ability, using adequate methods, to carry out laboratory sessions within specific time frames; and
• demonstrate the ability, in the form of written laboratory session reports, to clearly explain methods and results, and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based.
Judgement and approach
After completing the course, the student shall:
• demonstrate the ability to identify personal needs for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their continued learning; and
• demonstrate the ability to work systematically and to critically evaluate the result and choice of methods.
Learning activities
The course is comprised of teaching sessions, laboratory sessions and independent study.
Assessment
Requirements for pass (grade A-E): Passed laboratory sessions with report (1 credit) and passed written exam (6.5 credits).
The final grade is based on the written exam.

Course evaluation
The University provides students who are taking or have completed a course with the opportunity to share their experiences of and opinions about the course in the form of a course evaluation that is arranged by the University. The University compiles the course evaluations and notifies the results and any decisions regarding actions brought about by the course evaluations. The results shall be kept available for the students. (HF 1:14).
Interim rules
When a course is no longer given, or the contents have been radically changed, the student has the right to re-take the examination, which will be given twice during a one year period, according to the syllabus which was valid at the time of registration.
