The equivalent of English 6 in Swedish secondary school.
Pass in following course: MA209A: Analysis A and Linear Algebra, 15 credits or alternatively at least 15 credits from MA301A: Calculus with Applications and MA300A: Linear Algebra with Applications.

The course meets the degree requirement for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Computer Science.
The course is an elective programme course.
Course objectives
The purpose of the course is that the student develops knowledge and gain basic skills in statistical models in order to handle the stochastic variations and also be familiar with some data analysis methodologies, which are based on probability theory, for instance, parameter estimate, correlation and regression analysis, hypothesis testing.
Course contents
The Course contains the following moments:
- Probability theory: classical probability, Stochastic variables in one and higher dimension, some well-known distributions, Central limit theorems, Approximations
- Inference theory: Sampling, Descriptive statistics, Point-wise estimate, Confidence Interval, Comparison in pair and for independent samples, Hypothesis testing, Analysis of variance
- Statistical models: Correlation, Simple linear regression, Nonlinear regression, Multiple regression
- SPSS program
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
- knowledge of descriptions for data set, such as mean, median, variance, standard deviation and scatter diagram
- understanding of basic concepts and laws for stochastic variables
- knowledge of several statistical models often used in natural science and technology
- skill in usage of computer program SPSS for data analysis
Skills and abilities
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
- skills to identify proper stochastic models for analysis of collected data
- skills to choose statistic models for experiment
- the ability to independently plan survey, conduct sampling of data, carry out a complete data analysis and interpret simulation results
- the ability to communicate in written or orally statistic results with people of various knowledge in statistics
Judgement and approach
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
- ability to critically examine the results published in Newspaper and Scientific journal
- insight about the role of statistics in modern society and the responsibility for individuals how statistics should be used properly
Learning activities
Lectures, lessons, computer labs and individual studies.
Assessment
Requirements for pass: Pass on written examination (6.5 credits) and passed computer lab reports (1.0 credit).
The final grade is based on the written examination.

Course evaluation
The university provides all students who are participating in, or have completed, a course to express their experiences and views on the course through a course evaluation which is organized at the end of the course. Interim rules
When a course is no longer given, or the contents have been radically changed, the student has the right to re-take the examination, which will be given twice during a one year period, according to the syllabus which was valid at the time of registration.
