Course objectives
The course aims to give knowledge of the concept of representation and how cultural positions were staged and how they are staged at present in diverse media and contexts. Also, the course aims to teach how the concept of representation interrelates with different genres, aesthetics and understandings of reality. Central to the course is the analysis of ways in which media create and support power relations, especially, how the so called new media can create and support power relations and how these can support social change.
Course contents
Topical to this course is medial content in various media and how it is employed in different genres. The course introduces to medial expressions and representations of issues and what social and political implications can follow from these. Different definitions of crucial terms like media, representation, power are discussed in this context. The course is held in English to allow its participants to train active participation in debates on media and representation and to present their own perspective on these in English.

After completing this course, students ought to
- describe and reflect on different media definitions (1)
- describe and reflect on forms of medial representation (audio-visual stagings) and their relation to technical conditions in different media (2)
- describe and reflect on social, technical, and cultural aspects of medial representations (3)
Competence and skills
After completing this course, students ought to be able to
- show the ability to analyse the forms and content of medial representations (4)
- reflect critically on medial representations and discuss these with a perspective on ethics of media and gender theory (5)
- show the ability to discuss medial representations in English language (6)
Judgement and approach
After completing this course, students ought to be able to
- reflect and judge reflectively knowledge of media and power in relation to medial representations and constructions (7)
Learning activities
The course depends on the students' activity and learning. Teaching forms used are lectures, seminars, group work and individual work under supervision. At the seminars, students are to present chosen issues and texts to the course, these presentations are prepared in independent work, but with limited supervision.
Assessment
Presentation of a topic / text = oral examination 3 hp (learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 6)
Take Home Test 4,5 hp (learning outcomes 3, 4, 5 and 7)

The course is concluded with an individual course evaluation focusing on the goals of the course. The evaluations are summarized and made available to the students at the completion of the course.
