Course contents

Students are introduced to the philosophy of science and notions of scholarly rigour and validity in relation to the concerns of interaction design research. In a broader sense, we unpack the meaning of knowledge creation and application in the design process. The wider discourse of interaction design research is introduced through contemporary and classic interaction design texts.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will have demonstrated
1. Writing in an academic style, with appropriate language, formatting, citing and structuring 2. Selection of relevant texts to support an argument
3. Ability to frame and describe an existing research topic from the field of interaction design 4. Ability to relate an argument to interaction design in a broad sense
5. Reasoning based on relevant literature.

Learning activities

Lectures, seminars, exercises and independent work. Students develop their scholarly skills in the context of a written essay on an interaction design topic.

Assessment

The course is examined through assessment of an essay in a chosen area of research in interaction design (Learning outcomes 1-5).

Course literature and other study material

You will be introduced to these books in the course and they will serve you for other courses as well.
• Muratovski, G. (2016) Research for Designers: A Guide to Methods and Practice. Sage Publishers
