The course can normally be included as part of a general degree at undergraduate level.
Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to develop students’ scholarly practice (such as engaging with literature, constructing arguments and writing in an academic fashion) in relation to the field of interaction design.
Course contents
Students are introduced to the philosophy of science and notions of scholarly rigour and validity in relation to the concerns of interaction design research. In a broader sense, we unpack the meaning of knowledge creation and application in the design process. The wider discourse of interaction design research is introduced through contemporary and classic interaction design texts.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will have demonstrated
1. Writing in an academic style, with appropriate language, formatting, citing and structuring 2. Selection of relevant texts to support an argument
3. Ability to frame and describe an existing research topic from the field of interaction design 4. Ability to relate an argument to interaction design in a broad sense
5. Reasoning based on relevant literature.
Learning activities
Lectures, seminars, exercises and independent work. Students develop their scholarly skills in the context of a written essay on an interaction design topic.
Assessment
The course is examined through assessment of an essay in a chosen area of research in interaction design (Learning outcomes 1-5).

Additional research texts will be provided per lecture and essay topics.
Course evaluation
The University provides students who participate in or who have completed a course with the opportunity to make known their experiences and viewpoints with regards to the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarize the results of course evaluations as well as informing participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures initiated in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
