Course contents
The course consists of 18 to 20 weeks of internship, during the regular term, at an organization, authority or company at the international, national or municipal levels, involved in activities pertaining to human rights at different in different sectors (political, social, economic, etc). Possible examples of internship placement are intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations, The European Union, as well as non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International, The Red Cross and others, as well as various National representations and offices such as consulates and embassies.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
After completion of the course, the student shall:
- display a deepened knowledge and understanding of practices and activities relating to International Relations;
- display a deepened knowledge and understanding of employment opportunities within sectors related to International Relations; and
- display knowledge and understanding in relation to Malmö University’s perspectives (environment, gender, migration, and ethnicity).
Applying knowledge and understanding
After completion of the course, the student shall:
- display a capacity to apply his/her theoretical knowledge of International Relations; in a given area of practice;
- display a capacity to, in an independent manner, establish contacts and networks with actors involved in International Relations;
- within the allotted time, give written and oral reports of the experiences gained from the practical work in International Relations;
- display a capacity to discuss a relevant independently chosen topic related to International Relations; that is relevant to the internship; and
- have obtained a deepened ability of applying his/her knowledge of Malmö University’s perspectives on questions relating to human rights.
Making judgments and communication skills
After completion of the course, the student shall:
- display an ability to assess his/her own competence and to identify relevant areas of potential work within International Relations; and
- display an ability to independently assess his/her need for further knowledge of International Relations.
Learning activities
Practical work with issues related to international relations.
Assessment
The students’ performances at their internships will be assessed by a written certification, an oral presentation and a written report. The oral presentation will be given to the examining IR teacher and IR students within the program that have not yet completed their elective semester within the framework of the program. Time for oral presentations shall be booked with the program administrator. The written report shall include a description of the tasks performed by the student during the internship and the general area of human rights this relates to, as well as a more in depth discussion on an aspect of IR that the student finds germane to the experiences gained through the internship.

Course evaluation
All students will be given the opportunity to give their reflections, orally or in writing, at the end of the course, and a compilation of the results of the course evalutaions are to be made available through the faculty’s intranet. In addition, opportunites for evaluation of separate course modules occur.
Student influence is exercised through the course council.
