The course is included as a part of the two-years Master’s program in International Migration and Ethnic Relations.
Course objectives
The course's purpose is to develop students' research skills.
Course contents
The course consists of the following module:
Project Work, 30 credits
The project work is a supervised project. Supervision is carried out on an individual basis and includes seminar meetings.
Learning outcomes
After the student has completed the course two-years master’s thesis in International Migration and Ethnic Relations s/he should be able to:
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the academic study in International Migration and Ethnic Relations.
- Display excellent academic writing skills in the English language.
- Identify, motivate and formulate an adequate aim and relevant research questions in the field of International Migration and/or Ethnic Relations.
- Critically and systematically integrate previous research relevant to independently defined research questions.
- Critically discuss and argue for independent theoretical and methodological choices in a research process.
- Independently gather empirical data.
- Integrate theory with the method in an in-depth analysis of empirical material and situate the study within the main field of International Migration and/or Ethnic Relations.
- Critically assess the research based on scientific and ethical aspects.
- Identify and critically argue the need for further knowledge within the chosen subject
- Independently plan and conduct research in the field of International Migration and/or Ethnic Relations within given time frames.
- Orally present and discuss other students’ scientific work as well as defend his or hers own work.
Learning activities
Supervision, seminar and the writing of a thesis. For further assistance, the student has access to the university’s computer rooms and library.
The student who has not finished the project work during the course or has not received a passing grade on the project work at the end of the course cannot be guaranteed continued supervision.
Assessment
Examination is in the form of a written thesis and a seminar wherein the student defends his/her thesis. The written thesis counts for 28 credit points, and the opposition seminar counts for 2 credit points.
The student who does not pass the regular course examinations have the minimum of two re-sit opportunities. Re-sits take the same form as the original exams. The student does not, however, need to defend the thesis with the same topic more than one time.

Interim rules
If a course is no longer offered or has undergone major changes, students will be offered a minimum of two re-take sessions based on the syllabus in force at registration during a period of one year from the date of the implementation of the changes.
