The course is part of the main field of Media Technology and may be included in the degree requirements for a Degree of Master (120 credits) in Media Technology.
Course contents
The course aims for the student to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills required to independently carry out advanced projects within the field of media technology in a research-based manner.
- The course includes the writing of a master's thesis within the subject of media technology as well as the development of an exploratory prototype, artefact, model or similar.
- The work includes identification of a research area, formulation of a research problem, selection and review of relevant literature, design and implementation of an empirical study, and theoretically informed analysis.
- The course also includes critical review of others’ as well as one’s own work in relation to scientific, societal and ethical issues.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a pass, the studente shall be able to:
1. demonstrate scientific knowledge and practical ability within those parts of the media technology field that are relevant to the master's thesis.
Skills and abilities
For a pass, the studente shall be able to:
2. plan and implement research processes,
3. identify, formulate and manage complex issues in a critical, independent and creative manner;
4. critically review existing research of relevance to the master's thesis;
5. select, adapt and apply appropriate methodologies and research methods;
6. select, adapt and apply appropriate prototyping methods;
7. independently carry out a research project within given timeframes;
8. clearly present and discuss conclusions both orally and in writing.
Judgement and approach
For a pass, the studente shall be able to:
9. ssess and evaluate scientific work with regard to relevant scientific, societal and ethical issues,
10. identify the need for further knowledge within the subject
Learning activities
The course is primarily based on independent work, supervision and seminars
Assessment
For the grade Pass, the following is required:
- Project plan, 3 credits, grading scale UG; (Intended learning outcomes 1-6, 10)
- Thesis, 25 credits, grading scale UA; (Intended learning outcomes 1-10)
- Oral presentation and discussion, 1 credit, grading scale UG; (Intended learning outcomes 8)
- Written and oral opposition, 1 credit, grading scale UG; (Intended learning outcomes 1, 4, 9, 10)
All four components of the course must be completed and approved.
The final grade is based on the grade awarded for the Thesis component
Course literature
The course has no prescribed course literature; instead, it is determined individually in consultation with the supervisor.
Course evaluation
Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
Interim rules
If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.
