Course contents

The course focuses on the role(s) of global institutions in a time of challenges to democratic norms and the international system. It will assess and analyse the roles of key institutions which are either defending the current global order and democratic practices or building towards challenging that system. Students will develop knowledge and the ability to analyse crucial contemporary institutions such as the United Nations (and its programmes and agencies), the European Union, the G77 and the institutionalising BRICS.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module the student shall be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the key global institutions shaping the international system, including their functions and impact on global governance.
• Critically analyze the role of these institutions in defending democratic norms or challenging the current global order.
• Discuss on whether global institutions are reinforcing or undermining democracy, using case studies and empirical evidence.

Learning activities

The course builds on independent literature studies, lectures and active participation in seminars.

Assessment

The course is examined through an individual exam, active participation in seminars and presentations.

Course literature

The literature consists of relevant theoretical and empirical scholarly articles and institutional reports and documents. This is commensurate to a 7.5 credit course and the material is revised before each course period. All material will be fully available online.

Course evaluation

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.

Additional information

If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format. The syllabus is a translation of a Swedish source text.
