Course contents

The course aims to enable students to analyze the trends and developments that today's sports exhibit, in the form of, for example, facility development, the increased number of sporting events and the emerging sports tourism, and to be able to relate these to different perspectives on sustainable development.

The course covers the concept of sustainable development, its definitions and different ways of applying the concept and measuring sustainability factors. It also covers current development trends in sport, such as the great interest in arranging sporting events, the extensive construction of new arenas, the emerging sports tourism and the development of both club sports and commercial sports. In the next step, sustainable development is linked to the development of sport, and a central part of the course is to select and analyse parts of sports development using different sustainability factors.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  1. explain the meaning and possible applications of the concept of sustainable development
  2. explain current fields within sport and how these can be analysed from a sustainability perspective
  3. explain guiding and regulatory documents that govern sport in relation to sustainable development
  4. conduct and present a sustainability analysis of a sports phenomenon, for example a sports club, an event or an arena

Learning activities

The course contains varied work formats that can consist of lectures, guest lectures, seminars, group exercises, and self-study. The course is given online.

Assessment

All learning outcomes are examined in a Portfolio with Oral presentation, 7,5 credits.

For the grade Pass with Distinction on the course, the grade Pass with Distinction is required on the portfolio and the oral presentation.
