GXX / First cycle, in-depth level of the course cannot be classified
The course does not belong to a main field of study. The course is mandatory for the bachelor's degree in Business Administration - Specialization in Transport Management.
The aim of the course is to develop an understanding of the dynamics and complexity of passenger transports, as well as their impact on economic, social, and environmental development. By exploring the driving forces behind the development and use of transportation systems, students will be able to assess various strategies and policies such as taxes and regulations to promote sustainability and efficiency within the transport sector, e.g. public transportation and micro-mobility.
Infrastructure investments, development, integration and use of transportation systems require continuous evaluation and optimization to achieve transportation policy goals. Students should be able to identify and analyze how policies and changing travel behaviors can promote sustainable and efficient use of transportation infrastructure.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for transport systems, including public transport, and factors that affect the development of transport systems and infrastructure
- analyse how transport systems affect accessibility, safety, environment, travel behaviour, health and well-being for a more sustainable transport development
- explain the costs and revenues that govern the demand and supply of transport, passenger transport as well as freight transport
- analyse the use of policy instruments in the transport sector for the impact of travel behaviour, cost-effectiveness, energy use and climate impact
- account for the use of evaluation methods and their role in transport planning and implementation of transport policy
- develop the ability to write and critically analyze current research and literature related to transportation systems and their impact on society and the environment
Lectures, seminars including hand-in assignments, and self-study.
- Individual Examination, (6 hp) (UA) (learning outcomes 1-5)
- Active Participation in Seminars (1,5 hp) (UG) (learning outcome 6)
All learning outcomes are individually assessed
In order to pass the course all examining parts need to be passed. The final grade is based on the grade on the individual examination.

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.
If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format. The syllabus is a translation of a Swedish source text.
