1. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Degree of Engineering in Computer
Science, or a degree in a related field. All degrees must be equivalent to at least 180
higher education credits.
2. The equivalent of English B in Swedish secondary school.

This course forms part of Media Software Design, Computer Science, two‑year master’s programme, 120 higher education credits.

Course objectives

The aim of the course is that the student should gain understanding of the fundamental concepts of interaction technology. The student will learn what the limitations and opportunities of man and machine are, and how these should be taken into account when designing the interaction between them.

Course contents

The course contains concepts that are central to both traditional HCI (for example screen based interaction) as well as physical interaction. A number of topics are covered such as:
  • fundamentals of design thinking for software development
  • understanding users
  • social interaction
  • physical interaction
  • data gathering
  • data visualization
  • data mashups
The course ends with a project combining elements such as physical interaction, data gathering and visualization.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
  • knowledge of central concepts and theories of HCI - human computer interaction
  • knowledge of central concepts of design for software development
  • knowledge of central concepts of visualization
  • knowledge of central concepts of physical computing and physical interaction
Skills and abilities
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
  • ability to program microcontrollers connected to the environment through sensors and actuators
  • ability to use microcontrollers to collect and visualize data
  • ability to have a design approach to a given task in computer science
Judgement and approach
On completion of the course the student shall demonstrate:
  • ability to make an aesthetic judgement for different software solutions

Learning activities

Lectures approximately 10 hours, seminars approximately 10 hours, workshops approximately 20 hours, and individual studies approximately 160 hours.

Assessment

Requirements for pass: Passed written and oral presentation of the project.
Requirements for pass with distinction: passed with distinction written presentation of the project and passed oral presentation of the project.
