Entry requirements

1. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Degree of Engineering in Computer Science, or a degree in a related field. All degrees must be equivalent to at least 180 higher education credits.
2. The equivalent of English B in Swedish secondary school

This course forms part of Computer Science, one-year master’s programme, 60 higher education credits and Media Software Design, Computer Science, two‑year master’s programme, 120 higher education credits.

Course objectives

The aim of the course is that the student shall develop knowledge of research methodologies in Computer science. Further on the student shall demonstrate an in-depth ability to approach problems in Computer science in a scientific manner.

  • information retrieval
  • formulation of aims for a research project
  • formulation of scientific problems and hypotheses
  • selection of methods for solving a scentific problem
  • qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • statistical analysis
  • research ethics

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the course the student shall:
  • demonstrate knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • demonstrate knowledge on how research projects are carried out
  • demonstrate knowledge on ethical considerations in research projects
Skills and Abilities
On completion of the course the student shall:
  • demonstrate ability to formulate a scientific problem
  • demonstrate ability to find and evaluate relevant information for a scientific problem
  • demonstrate ability to analyse results with appropriate statistical methods
  • demonstrate ability to present results in a scientific manner
Capability of Assessing and Perception
On completion of the course the student shall:
  • demonstrate ability to identify his or her need of further knowledge within the major field of study, and to take responsibility for developing this knowledge
  • demonstrate understanding of the opportunities and limitations of science and its role in society and the responsibility for how it is used

Learning activities

Lectures (approximately 20 hours), seminars (approximately 20 hours) and individual studies (approximately 160 hours).

Assessment

Requirements for pass: Passed hand-in tasks (5 higher education credits) and passed written examination (2,5 higher education credits).
Requirements for pass with distinction: passed hand-in tasks (5 higher education credits)and passed with distinction written examination (2,5 higher education credits).

Course evaluation

All students are given the opportunity to give their comments at the end of the course in writing. A compilation of the results will be available on the faculty computer net. Student participation is in the form of course meetings.
