Progression level in relation to degree requirements

The course is included in the main field of Media and Communication Studies, and is a compulsory part of HAMKV Media and Communication Studies: Culture, Collaborative Media, and Creative Industries, Master's programme (Two-Year).

Course objectives

Based on the concept of collaborative media, the course examines how people today increasingly not only consume, but also design and produce media. The conditions underpinning this phenomenon are explored, as are their consequences. The main undertaking of the course is a group-based case study, in which students work strategically, conceptually, and creatively on a design-oriented project.

Course contents

In this practical course students work together in groups to prototype a collaborative media production dealing with a societal challenge. In relation to the productions, lectures are given on the theoretical underpinnings of the concept of collaborative media. The course also includes practical workshops on how to create collaborative media prototypes.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students shall be able to:
1. critically evaluate how collaborative media can best be used in different processes and contexts using relevant methods, and taking into account relevant scientific, social, and ethical aspects.
2. critically discuss the concept of collaborative media and its usefulness in relation to a specific case study, in both written and verbal form
3. collaborate with peers to work strategically, conceptually, and creatively on a design-oriented project

Learning activities

Learning activities include lectures, seminars, and a group project. Supervision is provided in connection with the group-based case study.

Assessment

1. A group case study (6 cr., LO 1 & 3)
2. A verbal group presentation (2 cr., LO 2)
3. An individual essay (7 cr., LO 1 & 2)
To pass the course, students must pass all assignments.
Three opportunities for examination are offered during the academic year. Students who have not finished the course, have the opportunity to take part in examinations the next time the course is offered. Under such circumstances, assignments are carried out according to the literature and assignments that are valid during the time the examination is carried out.
For re-examination of certain assignments, such as production assignments and group projects, certain circumstances apply since the examination of these assignments is dependent on student participation during certain periods of time and in speci?c projects. Re-examinations will be offered according to the student’s rights, but with adjustments to the speci?c assignment since it cannot be conducted in the same context as the ordinary examination.

Course evaluation

The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
