Course objectives

The course aims to give the students further experience and opportunities for professional life. By working in teams with different competencies, students understand their own competencies on a deeper level. By working with design methodology in relation to complex problems and external actors and stakeholders, the student gains experience of the complexity of assignments. The course also broadens the student's professional experience and network.

Course contents

The course is project-based and engages students in interdisciplinary teams to work on briefs and challenges
defined by external actors. Using methods from design research, students will develop and test proposals to respond different challenges. The course will also include lectures and seminars with experts in project management, intellectual property, and other themes that might be relevant for students’ future professional life. The course consists of three parts. The second part consists of individual work and is planned to allow for students to travel and work individually for a period during the course.
Part 1. Understand the challenge. Team work with an assignment from an external actor in focus, which ends with
a group presentation.
Part 2. Individual written reflection. Individual assignment, reflecting on the experiences from part 1, contextualized and discussed with references to course literature.
Part 3. Articulate possible ways forward. Concepts are developed in teams in dialogue with the case owner. This
part ends with a group presentation and an individual comment on another group's work.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Explore complex societal and business-related issues in dialogue with different actors, using methods from design research.
2. Discuss social relations, conflict management and leadership in collaborations in relation to different professional groups and other actors.
3. Reflect on your own professional competence and practice.
4. Develop design proposals for complex societal and business-related issues in dialogue with various actors, using methods from design research.

Learning activities

The course will mix project work with lectures, workshops, group supervision and seminars.
External actors will provide a problem statement or a case to work on, and give feedback during the work.
The lectures will include input from professionals from relevant fields (preferably K3 alumni) and experts in project management, intellectual property rights, cross-sector collaborations, design and societal challenges and themes relevant to the case and future professional life. On-site participation is expected, except in the middle of the course.
The course also includes Individual written reflection about 3 weeks half-time (60 hours) where the student works independently.

Assessment

• Understand the challenge: project presentation in group + individual log book. (2 credits, LO 1)
• Individual written reflection (2 credits, LO 2 & 3)
• Articulate possible ways forward: small project compilation (written and visual) and presentation in group + individual log book. This assignment also includes written or oral individual feedback on other students' project presentation (3,5 credits, LO 2 & 4).
Three opportunities for examination are offered during the academic year. Students who have not finished the course, have the opportunity to take part in examinations the next time the course is offered. Under such circumstances, assignments are carried out according to the literature and assignments that are valid during the time the examination is carried out.
For re-examination of certain assignments, such as production assignments and group projects, certain circumstances apply since the examination of these assignments are dependent on student participation during certain periods of time and in specific projects. Re-examinations will be offered according to the student’s rights, but with adjustments to the specific assignment since it cannot be conducted in the same context as the ordinary examination.

Course evaluation

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.

Additional information

If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format. The syllabus is a translation of a Swedish source text.
