Organisation
This Master’s program focuses on English language education, specifically the methods of English language teaching, the integration of technolo¬gy in the classroom, educational theory, and research in second language acquisition. The program is largely integrated with the regular English teacher program at Malmö University, and immerses the students in developing practical techniques, methods, and materials for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), such as virtual exchange, storytelling and creative writing. Other key areas of study are English grammar in the context of TESOL, adolescent language development, and bilingual and multicultural education. The aim of the program is to give in-depth knowledge about English and education. Depending on the students’ previous first-cycle studies the program can either be seen as providing an in-depth specialization to a teaching degree or constituting an alternative to a conventional language degree. In both cases, language development and language learning is given a clear progression through the courses.
Moreover, the ability to carry out different kinds of research, and the collection, analysis and presentation of research results is developed. During the final, full semester, the students complete an extensive, independent research project in the form of a Master’s thesis (30 credits).
Content
The two-year Master's in English and Education consists of three semesters (90 credits, advanced level) that are program-specific, and one semester (30 credits) of non-compulsory courses.
The optional courses could either be chosen from non-obligatory courses on offer at Malmö University or be taken at a partner university or consist in previously taken courses which have been validated on entering the programme.
