Course objectives
This course explores the cultural and creative industries, which practically deploy strategies, themes, and frameworks related to Media and Communication Studies. We examine the origins and development, possibilities and challenges of these industries, and direct knowledge gained from course readings and case studies towards practical assignments that put students in touch with international cultural and creative organisations beyond the university.
Course contents
The course includes with a series of seminars about various institutional and theoretical perspectives on the cultural and creative industries. Students will meet local and/or international creative and cultural actors, who will visit our classroom to discuss their current work. Assignments will put students in conversation with cultural and creative organisations.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students shall be able to:
- demonstrate verbally and in writing advanced knowledge and understanding of the cultural and creative industries from an international perspective
- critically assess the cultural and creative industries from micro- and macro-methods perspective
- evaluate the capitalization of creativity in the cultural and creative industries in various international contexts.
Learning activities
Learning activities include lectures, seminars, and presentations by guest speakers. Students use both macro- and micro-methods to examine organizations of their choosing, and report on their results in both oral and written forms.
Assessment
Assignments include written and verbal components.
- A group project report in two parts: (a) an analysis of a chosen organisation from a macro perspective (5 cr., LO 1 & 2), and (b) analysis of the same organisation from a micro perspective (5 cr., LO 1,3,4)
- A comprehensive verbal presentation of the above research at a final seminar (2 cr., LO 1)
- An individual essay (3 cr., LO 1).
To pass the course, students must pass all assignments.
Three opportunities for examination are offered during the academic year. Students who have not finished the course, have the opportunity to take part in examinations the next time the course is offered. Under such circumstances, assignments are carried out according to the literature and assignments that are valid during the time the examination is carried out.
For re-examination of certain assignments, such as production assignments and group projects, certain circumstances apply since the examination of these assignments is dependent on student participation during certain periods of time and in specific projects. Re-examinations will be offered according to the student’s rights, but with adjustments to the specific assignment since it cannot be conducted in the same context as the ordinary examination.
