The course is included in the main field of Cultural Studies and can be included in the degree requirements for a Master's degree in Cultural Studies.

Course contents

The aim of the course is for students to develop expertise in a field of their own choice, with the aid of supervisors. Students should also develop their competences in conducting an autonomous, critical and academic work on master level.

A scientific study is conducted in the course, which is reported in the form of an academic paper. Selection of the problem, methodology and theoretical framework and the creation of empiricism is carried out in consultation with the supervisor. The student must carry out an in-depth study of some part of the cultural studies field in the degree project. The student must also critically and constructively evaluate and discuss the degree projects written by others.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

After completing the course students shall:

  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of research issues in Cultural studies and their relation to a methodological and scientific field. (1)

**Competence and skills **

After completing the course students shall:

  • be able to design and carry out a scientific thesis (2)
  • demonstrate the ability to search for, collect, evaluate and critically interpret relevant literature and material within a chosen research topic (3)
  • be able to critically discuss phenomena, issues and situations (4)
  • be able to identify, formulate and solve problems (5)
  • have the ability verbally and in writing to describe the problem area and proposed solutions for the target group in the academy (6)

Judgement and approach

After completing the course students shall:

  • demonstrate the ability to make assessments in relation to relevant disciplinary, social and ethical aspects (7)
  • demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge (8)

Learning activities

Teaching consists of autonomous work by students, lectures, practical exercises, seminars and supervision.

Assessment

Thesis dissertation (28 credits) and an opposition seminar (2 credits)

Course literature

Course evaluation

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.

Additional information

If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format. The syllabus is a translation of a Swedish source text.
