Course contents

The course is problem-driven, cross-disciplinary, and addresses real-world, complex urban and regional problems. Students have the opportunity to advance skills and competences developed in previous studies, particularly in the use of GIS data, through more in‑depth and analytically oriented project work. Students will conduct in‑depth studies on selected topics within areas such as environmental analysis, real estate and land use, transportation, spatial planning, and urban development.

The course provides students with the conceptual knowledge, methods, and tools required for the analytical and critical use of spatial and statistical data in urban and regional studies

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Formulate and operationalize complex spatial research questions in urban or regional studies
  2. Identify, evaluate, and acquire relevant spatial and non-spatial data sources
  3. Integrate GIS with statistical and/or programming tools for advanced analysis
  4. Select and apply appropriate spatial analytical techniques
  5. Build reproducible analytical workflows and communicate results through story maps
  6. Critically reflect on ethical issues, data bias, and societal implications of spatial analysis

Learning activities

The course includes lectures, supervision, seminars, exercises, project work, and self‑study. The forms of instruction require continuous and active participation.

Assessment

Individual assignments (3,5 credits) (UG) (Learning outcomes 2, 3, 4)

Active participation in a discussion seminar (3,5 credits) (UG)(Learning outcomes 1, 5, 6)

Final individual report and oral presentation (8 credits) (UA) (Learning outcomes 1-6)

All learning outcomes are individually assessed.

For a passing grade, students must receive a passing grade on all assignments. The final grade is based on the final individual report and oral presentation, provided that the student has passed the other two assignments.

Course literature and other study materials

  • Harrie, L. (latest edition). Geographic Information Processing: Theory, Methods and Applications. Studentlitteratur, Lund.

Additional course materials, including handbook materials, tutorials, and scientific articles, will be provided during the course.

Course evaluation

Malmö University provides students who participate in, or who have completed a course, with the opportunity to express their opinions and describe their experiences of the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The University will compile and summarise the results of course evaluations. The University will also inform participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures taken in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).

Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered, or has undergone significant changes, the students must be offered two opportunities for re-examination based on the syllabus that applied at the time of registration, for a period of one year after the changes have been implemented.

Additional information

If a student has a Learning support decision, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted test, or to allow the student to take the exam in a different format. The syllabus is a translation of a Swedish source text.
