The course can normally be a part of a first-cycle qualification.

Course objectives

The aim of the course is to develop elementary knowledge and skills in the Swedish language as well as a basic introduction to Swedish society and culture.

Course contents

The course builds a very simple vocabulary and basic grammatical parts for oral and written weekday communication and - production in Swedish. The course also contains reading of very simple texts. In all parts, the Swedish everyday life /the student life stands in focus. In addition to what is brought up in the language instruction Swedish culture and Swedish social life will be presented and discussed in English.
After finishing the course, the student will have a knowledge of Swedish that corresponds to Level A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference scale (CEFR).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student can:
1. use a simple basic vocabulary of commonplace Swedish words and phrases
2. read and understand simple texts in Swedish
3. write short and very simple texts about themselves and their daily lives in Swedish
4. demonstrate mastery of the most basic grammatical constructions in Swedish
5. orally produce very simple sentences and phrases about themselves and daily lives in Swedish
6. participate in discussions about everyday topics in very simple Swedish
7. demonstrate the ability to understand very simple spoken Swedish
8. describe basic aspects of Swedish social and cultural life.

Learning activities

Learning activities are lectures, practical exercises - both individual and in groups- , role-plays, dialogues and discussions. Other Learning activities are independent studies and writing. The student will practice practical language skills through web-based material, for example the Swedish Institute's beginner's course Learning Swedish.

Assessment

Exam 1: Written Sit-in Exam, 3 credits. The exam examines learning outcomes 1-4.
Exam 2: Oral Exam, 1 credit. The exam examines learning outcomes 5-7.
Exam 3: Written Assignment, 1 credit. The exam examines learning outcome 8.
The grades of Oral examination and Written Assignment is Pass/Fail (G/U)
Grading criteria for the course are announced by the course director in the beginning of the course.
For all assessments, the basis must be such that individual performance can be distinguished.

Material for Swedish culture and Swedish social life will be distributed by the teacher.
Additional material may be introduced but no more than 100 pages.

Course evaluation

All students are given the opportunity to complete a written evaluation at the end of the course, and a summary of the results will be made available.
Students also have opportunities to orally evaluate the course.
Students influence is exercised through direct conversations about the various elements of the course.
