Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop students’ English grammar and communications skills in order to facilitate successful study at university level.
Course contents
A combination of resources is available, including lectures, seminars, and self-study of course literature.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student can:
1. identify and analyse the functions of:
• grammatical categories in English, such as parts of speech and sentence elements
• different sentence structures and clause combinations.
2. develop a critical approach with regards to grammatical proficiency in academic writing and develop the ability to formulate concise, correct, and well-structured English sentences.
3. apply knowledge of English grammar when writing by recognizing and correcting errors in grammar and punctuation in their own written production as well as in that of their peers;
Learning activities
1. Grammar Tuition: to build understanding of sentence structure and identify functions of different grammatical elements:
• Lectures, seminar discussions, self-study, and practice of relevant grammar readings.
2. Essay writing: to develop grammatical proficiency in and a critical approach to academic writing:
• Non-graded writing assignments will give the student diagnostic feedback on their progress through the course, with special consideration given to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and structure. Comments will focus on whether they have applied knowledge of these elements correctly when writing academic texts.
3. Applying knowledge of English grammar
• Students engage in peer review tasks, where oral and/or written feedback relating to errors of grammar and punctuation is encouraged.
Assessment
The forms of examination in the course are:
Portfolio of Essays 1 & 2, 0,5 hp, (Pass/Fall)
Essay 3, 2 hp - (A-U)
Essay 4, 2 hp - (A-U)
Essay 5, 3 hp - (A-U)
Students who do not pass the regular course exams are offered two additional resit opportunities in connection to the course. After these first three opportunities, students’ right to further re-examination is limited to three additional opportunities. All resits follow the same form as the original exams.

Additional material may be introduced in the course, but no more than 150 pages.
Course evaluation
The University provides students who participate in or who have completed a course with the opportunity to make known their experiences and viewpoints with regards to the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The
University will compile and summarize the results of course evaluations as well as informing participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures initiated in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
Interim rules
If a course is no longer offered or has undergone major changes, students will be offered two re-take sessions based on the syllabus in force at registration during a period of one year from the date of the implementation of the changes.
